Ever heard someone try to sing who isn't a very good singer? Or someone try to tell jokes who isn't really very good at being a comedian? That's when you'll often hear the saying, "don't quit your day job!"

This article is about something different. We are assuming that you ARE qualified to do whatever it is that you are currently doing, though you may not be as happy in your current occupation as you would like to be.

Among the top 5 questions that I am asked, or issues that are raised by people I talk to, is whether or not someone should quit their job to work a home based business. Or, if they are currently out of work, whether they should try to make a go of working their business fulltime as opposed to looking for employment and/or going back to work.

In most cases the answer is, categorically, no! But, not always… Let's take a look.

Though many people get themselves into trouble by placing too much confidence in their ability to earn income from their newfound home business too soon, fortunately there are some very simple guidelines that you can use when considering such decisions.

1. Are you earning at least as much, if not more, in your home based business as you are in your current occupation?

If not, then you should really think twice before trying to venture out and quitting your job.

2. How long have you been working your business, and how long has the company been around?

Both are important factors. According to readily available statistics, such as from the SBA (Small Business Administration), most businesses fail within the first 5 years. Further, especially in network marketing, most new companies are out of business within a year or two. If you are pinning your future on a brand new company, that's probably not a very wise approach, especially if you don't have money saved up, as we'll discuss below. Similar factors apply to you. The more business experience you have and the longer you've been at it, the greater the likelihood that you too will be able to pass the test of time. If you are brand new to working your own business then you should probably allow some time before deciding to quit your current job.

3. How much do you have in liquid or readily accessible savings that you can use for living expenses?

Most financial planners and experts agree that you should have enough liquid savings to cover, at minimum, 3 months of living expenses and overhead. And 6 months to a year, or more, is even better.

In addition to the above, by all means always remember NOT to plan your future without a job on what you "hope" your home business will do, as opposed to already having a proven track record that demonstrates how much money you can reliably expect your business to put into your bank account.

Especially if you are new to being involved in a home business then it can be difficult really visualize what lay ahead. But, if you consider things from a standpoint with which you are already familiar, such as a job, it will be easier to understand. For instance, let's say that you currently work as a Senior Administrative Assistant and you decide that you would like a career change and you want to become a surgical nurse. Would you realistically expect to be earning money from that new occupation any time in the near future? Probably not. You would need to go to school, or back to school, perhaps for years, to be trained and prepared for entry into your new chosen profession.

This analogy seems obvious when applied to a job, but for some reason many people feel that they can simply jump into a new home business, with no prior experience, no training, etc., and make an immediate go of it. However, doesn't it only make sense that if you are going to become involved in starting a new business that, likewise, you will need to undergo the proper training, and that there will be a learning curve, etc.?

True, a certain small percentage of people do manage to create instant success, and a fulltime income, even starting a new business with no prior experience. But, those are the exceptions rather than the rule.

Most people working toward success in a home business will at the very least undergo a learning curve, will very likely experience some struggles along the way, and may very well end up spending or losing sizeable amounts of time and money before becoming profitable and creating a sustainable income. The more information and training you gather along the way the more likely you are to be successful, fasters, and with fewer headaches. But, even if you do well, it is still unrealistic to expect to create a fulltime income immediately starting from scratch.

Near the beginning of this article I cited a commonly known statistic about business failure rates. Another equally well known fact that you can likewise easily confirm via many sources, including the SBA (Small Business Administration), is that near the top of the list as reasons for business failure are a lack of capital and cash flow. In other words, not enough money. Knowing this, you would be especially wise to include your current employment, or some kind of regular employment that produces a steady paycheck, into your business planning.

Once you actually start making a profit in your home business, and you have a track record, then you can start planning your budget and your future according to what you realistically expect to earn each month in your business. However, until you get to that point you "business" operating budget realistically has to come either from the money that you earn in your current occupation, or from savings, or both. Quitting your job prematurely, or choosing not to seek employment when you have no other source of regular income, in the hopes that you will earn enough from your home business is, in most cases, a recipe for disaster unless you've followed guidelines similar to those discussed here.

Millions of people long to work from home, and the lucky few manage to achieve their ambition.  Once you have realized the dream, it's important to maintain the work-life balance or you could find your effectiveness declines.  Working at home still has its own pitfalls: you've left the day job and you're no longer shackled to the desk by your evil boss.  But your new boss can be even more tyrannical – it's you!!

The urge to make your business succeed is powerful.  All entrepreneurs feel that sense of urgency, and the need for perfection.   By making that change to the next e-mail or tweaking the website, it's going to make all the difference to the success of the business.  We all have to remember that the most important business asset we hold is ourselves, and we should prize it accordingly.  It is a truism that we only get one body, so we should take care.  Treat yourself like a thoroughbred, with the right diet, rest and exercise. 

Chances are that your workspace wasn't designed for the job.  If you don't use an office chair you are likely to be hunched over your screen, risking upper back tension and repetitive strain injury.  Now don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting a complete ergonomic assessment: I left my job to get away from the box-tickers!  It is possible to work in less-than-ideal conditions and survive, as long as we take some sensible steps and regular breaks.   

The other risk of internet working is a decline in your fitness, if you're not very careful.  It's easy to feel that time spent working out is time stolen from your business – try to change your mindset and see that this is a key part of your requirements.  You need to maintain your fitness routine for the sake of mind and body.  The work at home entrepreneur often spends hours each day without talking to another human being face to face. 

To deal with your posture and fitness needs, try to ensure you get out of the chair at least once an hour, and do a few stretches and shrugs to release tension in your neck and shoulders.  Stand with feet slightly apart and let you body relax downwards to touch your toes with the fingertips (or as far down as you can reach).  If you repeat this one regularly it's encouraging to see how much your flexibility can improve in a short time. 

It is a really good idea to leave your office once every three hours.  You can set an alarm to remind you, then go outside and walk for at least ten minutes.  If you have been hitting some blocks during the working day this is an ideal time for problem-solving: the fresh air will do wonders and help you think clearly.

Once a day, do some type of fitness work.  If you can get to a gym for a full workout, that's great and you will feel great afterwards.  If not, make sure you do something.  Here are a few exercises you can do anywhere:

- Stand up and place your hands on your knees and breathe out, pulling the abdominal muscles in strongly.  Hold for at least ten seconds, and breathe in.  Repeat ten times, build up gradually to at least 20 repetitions by the end of a fortnight. 

- Stand up and raise elbows level with your shoulders, and twist slowly as far as possible to your right.  Repeat the exercise to the left, do at least ten repetitions in each direction. 

- Stand up facing away from a solid table or chair, place palms on the surface with fingers pointing forwards.  Lower your body, keeping back straight and a slight tension in your abdominals. Come back up using the strength in your arms.  Repeat at least ten times. 

These are just a few ideas designed to take less than five minutes, and you will feel better for doing them.  It's also important to manage your time and allocate leisure breaks as well as time for socialising with friends and family.  If you are in the first year of setting up your business try to spend at least 30 minutes a day on something different – it is too easy to become blinkered, thinking and talking exclusively about the business.  Try to make this a habit, or you run the risk of bore everyone around you rigid!

One last idea, which may not be available to everyone, is to get a dog.  This is a great way to get away from the desk and keep active, and immensely rewarding.  If you can't have a dog of your own, see if anyone nearby needs a dog walker.  Now there's a home business idea .......

Article marketing has become a huge trend in Internet marketing today. Many marketers are using articles as their primary, and even sole, form of traffic generation and search engine optimization. However some marketers lament that article marketing doesn't seem to work for them, especially as their article submissions are often rejected.
I own and maintain three article directories. One is a general directory and two are niche directories. Every day I receive hundreds of article submissions and every day I reject dozens. When I first started I would carefully include a specific reason for each rejection but now submissions are so high it is all I can do to keep my head above water. Frankly, I feel it is more important to try to turn articles around in as timely a fashion as possible so I am all about speed now (and am still weeks behind with my general directory).
However I can share these tips in an open letter to article marketers who do not understand why their articles are rejected by my directories -- and likely other article directories as well.
The primary reasons articles are rejected by me include:
Reason 1: Active links in the body of the article. The only place I want to see an active link is the author resource box. This is fairly standard with most article directories.
Reason 2: The article does not belong in this directory. Usually this is true of a large percentage of my niche directory rejections. If the directory is about Internet promotion don't submit your articles about breast augmentation!
Reason 3: The article was not submitted to the right category. If I'm in a nice mood or I'm really interested in the article then I might recategorize it. If I recognize an author who regularly delivers quality content I might recategorize it. If it is in the right broad category I might move it to a more specific subcategory. However if it was submitted with no apparent thought or effort then I will most likely reject it. If the author can't be bothered to select the right category then why should I take the time?
Reason 4: Substandard English. If there are typos or poor grammar in the headline or summary then I am not impressed and will most likely reject the submission.
Reason 5: Subject spamming. If I receive a number of articles on the same subject and by the same author with similar titles and summaries then I will suspect article spamming. Rather than sort out which articles might offer quality unique content I simply reject them all.
Reason 6: Obscure topics. If I don't think that your article about New Jersey Divorce Lawyers will really add anything to my directory then I might just choose to reject it. Similarly if I can't tell what your article is about from the title, summary, or first paragraphs then I'm not going to read any further.
Reason 7: Blatant advertising. These are article directories so I don't want press releases or straight advertisements. Articles should include information about something other than whatever business you are trying to promote.
The simple fact is that these are my directories so I use my own editorial judgment about the appropriate content. I use the feeds and articles from my directories on my web sites and in my blogs, and my bottom line is that the article should offer interesting and/or appealing information to the target audience. If it isn't an article I want to see on my site then I choose to reject it.
